Walking Wired Consulting
I help you solve your computer problems.
Much of the time, I can implement the solution, but if I can't, I can help
you find the person who can. I offer a high level of customer service, patience,
and casual professionalism. I strive to present the information in easy-to-understand
language. My goal in working with clients is to educate them enough that they
no longer need my services, or that they need them for more advanced services.
I take pride when I see clients' mastery of what used to confound them. We
progress through gentle teaching.

Web Design
I provide simple web site design. I work to keep the costs down by providing
clients with opportunities to do some of the work themselves, depending on
their abilities and interest.
Linda's a long-distance
hiker who wanted a place for her journal and photos. Someone else set
up her initial site and she didn't like it. She came to me, and we developed
a flexible system that allowed her more control of the content. I did
the layout, recommended technologies, implemented the site, and help
her maintain it. |

buddy. Yogi need an inexpensive way to get the word out about her self-published
handbook designed to help a Pacific
Crest Trail hiker in planning and
hiking the trail. |

wildventana.com is the first site I did
for the Lucia Fontana Institute and my Dad's backcountry guiding service.
It's simple and didn't take a lot of time. The emphasis was providing
a quick and cheap web presence. |

Cindy came to me to get a simple presence
on the web for a start up business. She did the graphics herself and
had a clear vision for the look of the site. We worked together to create
an effective one-page site for around $200. |

This is my own site for my long-distance
backpacking journal and photos. |

Indonesia. |
Computer Consulting
I keep up on trends and technology so you don't have to. My role is to solve
problems and answer questions.
Here's some of what I do for clients:
Install wireless networks |
It's easy and relatively inexpensive
to have a network in your home with WiFi. If you have more than one computer
in your house and have trouble getting online, a wireless network can
help you share files and share a broadband connection to the Internet. |

Recommend new computer systems, including laptops |
I help clients get just the computer equipment
they need by asking questions and listening. I can help with desktop
PCs, laptops, printers, scanners and the rest. |
Move data from old systems to new systems |
Afraid of losing your data? Not sure how
to get your bookmarks from your old system to your new system? I can
help with all this. I've helped several clients feel confident in getting
rid of old computers. |
Recommend software solutions |
One client says, "I can't manage my photos."
I provided a solution. Another says, "Everybody in the office needs to be able to look at each other's calendars." I gave them a low-cost, low-maintenance solution using off-the-shelf software. A small business client was overwhelmed by his accounting software, so he was using increasingly cumbersome spreadsheets. I worked with him to set up a system and trained him to use it. His life is easier with my help. |
Recommend PDAs (personal digital assistants) |
I help clients move into the digital age.
They get rid of their paper organizers and begin life with a lot more
information at their fingertips. I specialize in PalmOne (formerly Palm)
handheld PDAs, but can also advise about Windows PDAs. |
Recommend Digital Cameras |
I help clients sort out the details and
make decisions about digital cameras. I have a photography background
and education. |
Often I arrive and clients have a long list of computer questions. We sit down, prioritize them and begin the process of answering them. Sometimes I provide training, for example how to use features of a web site, what they'll need to get a web site live or how to get photos off their new camera. Other times I dive into the old desktop PC that's got a long list of ailments. I can also review a computer system and make suggestions for getting more life out of it. Most of the time my work with clients is a mix of everything.
I also provided assistance with getting different devices to work together: getting the phone numbers on your computer onto your cell phone, getting your MP3 music files to play on your stereo, using your your computer to make your phone more useful. I have helped several clients buy and install new home theater systems too.
Contact me to find out if my services are right for you.
My base rate is $40/hour, and I offer a lower rate for certain non-profits. I am available to travel, and have clients in Los Angeles, San Francisco/Oakland, Rancho Mirage, and Tucson.
